Mānuka plants are sometimes covered with sooty mold, a black fungus feeding on the honeydew produced by scale insects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWidespread throughout the North, South, and Stewart Islands, mānuka\/kahikātoa thrives in diverse habitats, including wetlands, river gravels, and dry hillsides, reaching elevations of up to 1800 meters above sea level.
